WE’D
LIKE TO THANK LEONARD ISAACS, Stevenson H.S., for his terrific Bars and Vault
presentation at the Fall Clinic, along with Stephanie, Chelsea, and Lauren-our
SUPER demonstrators! Also, JUDY HARWOOD, Stevenson H.S., did a great Beam games
session, and DR. MOIRA STUART from N.I.U. gave a very beneficial session on how
to deal with fear in h.s. gymnasts. A BIG THANK YOU to all of you! (Note:
coaches, please let us know what topics you’d like for next year’s clinic.)
MEMBERSHIP
CONFERENCE REPS: Please call your conferences to remind them AND their ASSISTANT
COACHES to join (membership form is on the IHSGGCA Website).
Also, please remind everyone about the upcoming meeting on Mon., Nov. 15, 7 p.m.
at Maine East H.S. in Park Ridge. We hope personal phone calls will result in
increased membership, better communication among all coaches, and MORE
INVOLVEMENT in our Coaches’ Assn. We are still looking for Conf. Reps for the
following leagues:West Suburban-Gold Div.; Fox Valley; Mid Illini; Big Twelve;
and NCIC. If any coaches know someone in any of these leagues that would be
willing to be a Conf. Rep, please ask them to contact Betty Axelson-McClelland.
Conf. Reps will get their membership fees paid for the next year for their help
to the Assn. Also, please remind members if they have not voted for the Hall of
Fame, the enclosed ballot needs to be sent to Al Galatte at Rolling Meadows H.S.
by NOV. 15 (or bring it to the Nov. 15 Coaches’ meeting)
MEETING TOPICS
*Survey results of use of Gymnastics facilities and equipment by other school
groups, athletic teams, and P.E. classes – Jim Guest, Fremd H.S.
-Impact we can make in the h.s. to keep Gymnastics a VALUABLE SPORT
withequipment that so many groups use that we won’t have to continue fighting
to keep Girls’ and Boys’ Gymnastics in the high schools.
*Ideas on changing the season based on cheerleading and inherent problems –
AlGalatte has some thoughts; COME TO THE MEETING with your opinions!
*TOPICS and SPEAKERS for future meetings- need to get your input if we are going
to have enough time to get approval
from Il. State Bd. of Ed. for CPDU’s.
*Coach of the Year – voting change proposal.
*FUNDRAISERS: CASINO NIGHT IS TUES., NOV. 23 – We still need volunteers to
help with the 3-5 p.m., 5-7, and 9
p.m.-12 time slots. This is our biggest fund-raiser for all of our Coaches’
Assn. activities, so if you or your asst. coaches are notable to help with these
times, please ask someone you know if they could help us
out. You just exchange money for chips – it’s a painless job! Casino Night
is being held at Mr. Peters in Arlington Heights, very close to Hersey H.S.
Please call Betty Axelson-McClelland if you have found someone to help with one
of these time slots( 847-382-7487). I need their name, address, city, ss#, and
date of birth for the State of Illinois. THANKS VERY MUCH to the coaches who are
helping with this!
*Other fundraising ideas: T-shirts for Invites… please let us know if you
would be interested in selling shirts at invites you host. We need your input
immediately if this project is going to get underway in time to get the T-shirt
designed and printed for the Dec. invites. You would order a specific number of
shirts for your invite and if they didn’t all sell, we can pass them on to the
next invite. If coaches like thedesign, they may want to order them for their
teams and staff – they won’t be justfor invites. Please call Sue Fosco at
Niles North (847-626-2289) with how many you would like to order or tell us at
the Nov. 15 meeting. We will make a decisionat this time if we have a commitment
for enough invites to follow through with thisproject. Bring along some good
quotes or sayings for the T-shirt for our 11/15 mtg.
*If you are not interested in doing T-shirt sales for invites, but would be
willing todonate a part of your proceeds to the John Brinkworth Scholarship
Award or to the National Team Meet, that would be greatly appreciated! We will
award a $250 scholarship in Feb. in honor of John, and the National Meet is in
Orlando this May, which will be a costly meet for our assn., so either donation
is a VERY GOOD CAUSE!
*Another fundraiser has been suggested- hosting a meet on Feb. 26 at Niles North
H.S. for age-group gymnasts in a USAG sanctioned meet for Levels 5-10 girls.
Wewould need to provide the workers for the meet: timers, flashers, runners,
scorers, and some set-up/take down of equip. help for this afternoon meet. The
meet will be over in time for all of us to still get to the Hall of Fame Banquet
that night at 7 p.m.We will need to make the decision if we want to host this
meet at the Nov. 15 mtg., so if you can’t make it to the mtg., but are willing
to help in some way with the meet, please contact one of the officers.
*MON., DEC. 20 will most likely be our COSMIC BOWL at the Brunswick Zone
inPalatine. We will try to make this a coedevent with the Boys’ Coaches’
Assn. The cost for a team is $20 and teams can be made up of anyone, not just
gymnasts.
This is really a fun fundraiser for the National Team, so please announce this
to your gymnasts now so they can put it on their calendar, and of course, coaches
too!
REMINDERS
*Gymnasts may compete in a USAG meet up until 5 days after the start of your
season. There are very few qualifying meets for the USAG State Meets this early
in the season, so the Judges’ Cup meet is being held Friday, Nov. 12 for high
school girls Levels 7,8,9,10 in compliance with the IHSA rules.
*Kathy Krebs, IHSA Rules Interpreter and Representative to the National
Federation Rules Comm. would appreciate getting your rationale for either
keeping both the horse and the Vault Table for your h.s. meets or just providing
the Table.
She needs your input by March to take to the mtg., so please e-mail her your
thoughts at kmkrebs@aol.com.
*Encourage your assistant coaches to get involved in our assn.; bring them to
the meetings – Nov. 15, Jan. 18, and Feb. 28 at Maine East H.S., Faculty
Lounge, as well as fun events such as Cosmic Bowl! And be sure they come to the
Hall of Fame Banquet on Feb. 26 where we award the Assistant Coach of the Year!
*CHECK OUT OUR WEBSITE: IHSGGCA.ORG ! Sue Fosco has done a terrific job
maintaining our website, so keep up to date on assn. activities! Send Sue
information that you would like to see on the website: adteam4611@aol.com
